The Benambra Mine only operated for four years, but in that time produced an enormous amount of tailings, approximately 700,000 tonnes. But when the mine was abandoned during a company liquidation, it was left to the state government to secure the TSF and the toxic materials it held. As part of a massive rehabilitation program in 2006, the site incorporated a strict monitoring system. This system has revealed significant progress in the site’s restoration. That includes stabilized, near-neutral water, a massive 90% decrease in dissolved metal concentrations, and a reduction in sulphate concentration from 2,000 mg/L in 2006 to 50 mg/L in 2013. Ongoing monitoring has also found that downstream seepage from the TSF in nearly neutral, and water quality of the downstream wetland environment is vastly improved.
