A catastrophic tailings failure in Brumadinho, Brazil in January 2019, was the tipping point for the mining industry and led to a series of step-changes towards greater transparency, better governance, and improved monitoring, reporting and disclosure of tailings data.
The International Council on Mining and Metals (ICMM), the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and the Principles for Responsible Investment (PRI), co-convened a Global Tailings Review (GTR) to establish an international standard. On the 5th of August 2020 they launched the Global Industry Standard on Tailings Management (herein ‘The Standard’) to achieve the ultimate goal of zero harm to people and the environment. Underpinned by an integrated approach to tailings management, the Standard aims to prevent catastrophic failures and enhance the safety of tailings facilities globally. It embodies a step-change in terms of transparency, accountability, and safeguarding the rights of project affected people.
